Post and beam is a general term for building with heavy timbers. More specific types of post and beam framing are:

  • Timber framing - Traditional timber framing, often simply called timber framing, is an ancient traditional method of building using wooden joinery held together with pegs, wedeges and rarely iron straps. Half-timbering is a notable type of timber framing common in parts of Europe.
  • Post and lintel - A simple form of framing with lintels resting on top of posts
  • Pole building framing also called post-frame construction
  • Some Timber bridges particularly Covered bridges are framed with traditional joinery or metal connectors.
  • Japanese carpentry - Discusses tools but not timber framing as of January, 2013.
  • Japanese architecture - Has many images of timber framed buildings but not specifically on timber framing.
  • Ancient Chinese wooden architecture and Architecture of the Song Dynasty - Covers some aspects of Chinese timber framing.
  • Ständerhaus - a type of post and beam construction used in North German farmhouses
