daemontools is the "seminal process supervision toolkit" written by Daniel J. Bernstein as an improvement to the inittab, /etc/ttys, init.d or rc.local alternatives, providing all of the following features.
- Easy service installation and removal
- Easy first-time service startup
- Reliable restarts
- Easy, reliable signalling
- Clean process state
- Portability
Due to lack of ongoing maintenance for daemontools, newer tools such as runit have subsequently been preferred by some.
